Ford and Chevrolet have been competing for the title of fastest American brand on the Nürburgring Nordschleife for two years now, exchanging record laps, Motor1 reports.
In April, the Ford Mustang GTD Competition struck back, breaking the previous record of the Corvette ZR1X. Ford Performance factory driver Dirk Müller completed the Green Hell in 6 minutes 40.835 seconds, 8 seconds faster than the Corvette. Under the hood, the record-breaking Mustang has the same twin-turbo 5.2-liter V8 as the regular GTD, but produces more power than the standard 815 hp. How much is not specified.
It is known that the car was made lighter due to carbon fiber, magnesium wheels and lighter suspension elements. The aerodynamics have also been seriously reworked. At the same time, the car is considered serial: the company undertakes to release a limited edition of the road version of the GTD Competition. The price of the base Mustang GTD in the USA is $327,960 (approximately 24.5 million rubles), so the new product will not be cheap.
The point is that the current Mustang record is not absolute, but only among American production cars with internal combustion engines. The Europeans are still stronger: the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar is in the lead with a result of 6:29.09. Perhaps only the Porsche 911 GT2 RS under development will be able to compete with it.
Among all track cars (regardless of engine type), the absolute Nordschleife record belongs to the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo (5 minutes 19.546 seconds). Next up is the electric Volkswagen ID. R (6:05.335) and the petrol Ford GT Mk IV (6:15.977). For comparison, the fastest Chinese electric cars, such as the YangWang U9 Xtreme, are still significantly slower – their result is 6:59.157.
