Unlike Tesla, Rimac and Geely, who developed robotaxis from scratch, Xpeng created its version based on the production GX model, only additionally equipping it with the necessary equipment. This approach allows the automaker to significantly reduce development and production costs. Carscoops reports this.
Xpeng has not yet revealed whether the GX self-driving vehicle will have the same extended-range powertrain as the production version, or will use an all-electric one. However, it is known that the car is equipped with four of its own Turing AI chips with a total power of 3000 TOPS, as well as a steer-by-wire system.
The SUV is entirely developed in-house and meets Level 4 autonomous driving. Xpeng has been testing such vehicles on public roads across China since January. The pilot launch of the robotaxi service is scheduled for the second half of 2026.
Like the Teslas tested, Xpeng robotaxis will initially be equipped with a human controller behind the wheel in case of unforeseen situations. However, the Chinese automaker intends to phase out such “security officers” by early 2027.
