A Newport Beach car rental company said four of its compact Moke buggies, worth more than $200,000, disappeared in an elaborate scam linked to pop star Justin Bieber. The New York Post reports this.
According to the publication, an unknown person who introduced himself as “Alen” rented four compact Moke buggies. The man convinced the owners that the cars were needed to transport Justin Bieber to the Coachella festival.
The cars were delivered to the city of Palm Desert, but the promised deposit of 20 thousand dollars (approximately 1.5 million rubles) was never received. The scammers assured that the transfer would arrive the next day. Later, GPS data showed that the buggies were moving towards the US-Mexico border, after which their signals completely disappeared. The owners believe the vehicles have already been converted and are in Mexico.
The co-owner of the company called the incident “a very professional, well-thought-out robbery.” According to her, the attackers used a fake website, and the tow truck was prepared in advance. Law enforcement officials do not rule out connections with the Mexican cartel, although there is no official confirmation of this. The investigation is ongoing.
