The Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, through its social networks, published nostalgic posts dedicated to the failed UAZ-3170 project. Design of a fundamentally new model began almost immediately after the launch of the UAZ-469. In 1982, the first prototypes were released, created under the leadership of designer Valery Orlov and designer Albert Rakhmanov.
The car received a promising 100-horsepower UMZ-421 carburetor engine with a volume of 2.89 liters, with which the declared maximum speed was 120 km/h.
Ground clearance has increased to 325 mm, although the center of gravity has shifted lower, improving directional stability. The spring suspension increased the smoothness of the ride.
In addition to the SUV, the factory workers planned to design a cabover van. But the project was closed as too expensive after the creation of several prototypes.
