The most common causes of increased engine oil consumption are loss of elasticity of seals and wear of the cylinder-piston group. Sergey Pletnev, director of after-sales service for the Avtodom group of companies, told Gazeta.Ru about this.

According to the specialist, loss of tightness of rubber components (oil seals, gaskets) leads to external oil leaks. The problem is solved by replacing them.

The second common reason is typical for cars with high mileage: due to changes in cylinder geometry, the gap between the wall and the piston rings increases. This causes oil leakage, and then coking of the rings and damage to the cylinder walls.

The expert calls the third factor a malfunction of the crankcase ventilation system. In the event of a breakdown, the oil does not return to the crankcase, but enters the intake and combustion chamber, where it burns along with the fuel.

The fourth possible reason is a malfunction of the turbocharger, when, due to a violation of the outflow of oil, some of it enters the turbine, and from there into the exhaust or intake manifold.

The fifth reason lies in the choice of oil: the use of fluids not approved by the manufacturer (with improper viscosity or tolerances) leads to an increased “appetite” of the engine.
