The main problem is the territorial behavior of martens. These animals react especially aggressively to the scent marks of rivals. If such marks are on car parts (ignition wires, electrical wiring, cooling system hoses), the marten will gnaw them.
Jörg Asmussen, CEO of the German Insurance Association (GDV), cites the following statistics: in 2024, German insurance companies registered about 252 thousand claims regarding cars damaged by martens.
The total cost of damage caused by wild animals amounted to 157 million euros (13 billion rubles), or 620 euros (54 thousand rubles) for each marten attack.
Motorists are advised to regularly check the engine compartment in order to promptly detect traces of animals and promptly clean parts from odor marks.
