Journalists from the US publication Carscoops talked about the deep modernization of the Lada Niva Legend, which received the first ever airbag, a galvanized body and a new engine.

An updated version of the iconic SUV produced in 1977 was presented at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). Despite the age of the model (49 years), AvtoVAZ did not discontinue it, but carried out large-scale technical improvements. In total, engineers used more than 100 new and 60 modernized parts.

American journalists sincerely admired the survivability of the model: they note that most of the cars produced in 1977 are now in museums or have turned to rust, and the Lada Niva is not only still in service, but has also received a serious technical update.

The galvanized body caused special surprise and approval – for the West, where Lada has been criticized for rust for decades, the news about double-sided galvanization sounds almost like a miracle. Finally, Western observers called the appearance of the first airbag in almost 50 years (albeit a quarter of a century late) “better late than never.”
