The first and most obvious symptom is unusual sounds: knocking, clicking, clicking, whistling or grinding do not just happen, reports Lenta.ru with reference to Vladimir Bakharev, chief trainer of the Driving Without Danger expert center.

“An engine knock that increases with speed is the worst sound a driver can hear; it indicates problems with the connecting rod bearings or chain. The clicking sound indicates a lack of oil in the hydraulic compensators, and the whistling indicates wear on the belts of the auxiliary units,” Bakharev clarified.

The second sign of impending problems is the color of the exhaust gases: black smoke means an over-enriched mixture or oil getting into the cylinders, blue smoke directly indicates wear of the piston group and oil in the combustion chamber, and white thick smoke with the smell of acetone is a sign that antifreeze is getting into the cylinders, and all three cases are likely to lead to a major overhaul.

In addition, a drop in traction and unstable engine operation should be of concern: the car accelerates worse, vibrations appear at idle, jerks and dips when pressing the gas, and the engine may stall on its own without load.

The expert also emphasized that if the smell in the cabin has changed – the smell of oil or fuel, including gasoline, has appeared – this directly indicates a leak of these liquids and is a bad sign.
