When purchasing a car that was imported in violation of customs rules, the buyer risks facing serious consequences – from additional charges of salvage duty to suspension of registration with the traffic police. Andrey Grishakov, director of the used cars department of Avtodom and AutoSpetsCenter Group of Companies, told Gazeta.Ru about this.
“When purchasing a so-called “gray” car imported in violation of customs procedures, the risks are extremely high. The main one is the additional charge of recycling fees. If the previous owner registered the car as an individual at a preferential rate for personal use, and then resold it, the obligation to pay the full amount (up to several hundred thousand rubles) may fall on the new owner,” the expert said.
According to the expert, cars imported through parallel imports are deprived of a factory warranty, and their registration with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate may be suspended due to discrepancies in customs documents. Grishakov recommended buying used cars from official dealers – they offer legally clear documents, a confirmed history and a guarantee. When purchasing on your own, the expert advised checking the VIN using the traffic police database and the register of pledges, and also requiring a full package of customs documents.
