The creators of the “charged” BMW admitted that it turned out to be easier to fit the legendary “shark nose” into the safety requirements than to install all the necessary sensors on it. An iconic BMW design element familiar from the E24 coupe of the 1970s returns: it appears on the Vision BMW Alpina concept, which debuted after the Alpina brand came under the wing of the BMW concern. But the main problem in bringing it to a production car is not the strict pedestrian protection standards, but the need to integrate radar and cameras.
A “shark nose” is normal from a pedestrian safety point of view. As it turns out, the biggest problem is all these driver assistance systems, all the cameras, radars and laser scanners. Fitting them into the exterior is what is most difficult today,” BMW Blog quotes BMW Chief Designer for Luxury Cars and Alpina Curator Maximilian Missoni as saying.
The company has recently turned to the design heritage of the past three times, releasing the Skytop concept in 2024, the Speedtop in 2025, as well as the recently shown Vision BMW Alpina coupe. And if the latter is a pure design study without obligations to release a production model, then Skytop and Speedtop were released in small series of 50 and 70 pieces. It is also planned that in 2027 Alpina, under the auspices of BMW, will launch mass production of the 7 Series sedan with a V8 engine.
