The car, which had been reported stolen for 44 years, was recovered from the bottom of Rochdale Pond in Leicester. This was reported by the local police. The pickup was discovered using an echo sounder that a fisherman was using to scan the bottom for fish. Following the discovery of the vehicle, a Massachusetts State Police dive team, the Leicester Highway Patrol and local firefighters responded to the scene and worked together to bring the vehicle to the surface.

The Volkswagen Rabbit pickup truck, which has lain underwater since 1982, has been preserved in complete condition. Water and a thick layer of algae covering the body slowed down the corrosion.

In addition, police were able to identify the owner of the vehicle and confirm that the pickup truck was stolen when it was practically new. The pickup truck found in the pond is known in the European market as a Volkswagen Caddy. In the US it was sold under the name Rabbit Pickup.

No traces of crime or valuable items were found in the car raised from the water. According to the main version of the police, the attackers simply abandoned the car when they realized that they could not escape with it. The further fate of the car is not specified.
