The presentation of the car, which set reliability standards for decades to come, took place in the south of France in January 1976. The model was produced for many years and gained worldwide popularity. “One Hundred and Twenty-Third” was widely used in taxis and performed in rallies; many of the cars in this series are still on the road.
Half a century ago, in January 1976, Mercedes-Benz introduced a model that not only became a commercial success, but predetermined the standards of the business class and set the direction for the German brand for decades to come.
In January 1976, a car appeared in Mercedes-Benz showrooms that instantly put its competitors in the position of catching up. The W123 sedan, the predecessor of the current E-class, was sold out even before the official start of sales – dealers sold out a batch of cars from the first year of production on pre-orders. Such excitement around the business class model in the mid-1970s was exceptional.
At the same time, the car was born in a difficult time: after the oil crisis of 1973 and a wave of stricter safety requirements in the USA and Europe. Mercedes-Benz’s response to these trends has been very thoughtful. The body design, for which the Italian Bruno Sacco, one of the greatest automotive stylists who began his career at Pininfarina and Ghia, was responsible, deliberately inherited the features of the flagship W116 S-Class.

This move raised the status of the model, and the technical solutions brought down “from top to bottom” were not about image, but about real safety. We are talking, for example, about an injury-proof steering column, which was deformed during an accident, but did not extend into the driver’s cabin.
Test site for systems
Among other things, the W123 became for Mercedes-Benz a kind of testing platform for technologies that would soon become a mandatory minimum for everyone. In 1980, the model was offered one of the world’s first serial anti-lock braking systems (ABS) from Bosch. And since 1982 – a driver’s airbag.

Both options were exotic at the time, especially for a mid-range car. Their appearance on the W123 was not marketing: Mercedes-Benz methodically worked out real life-saving mechanisms on a mass model, setting the vector for the development of the entire industry. It was after the success of these systems on the W123 that competitors from Bavaria and Ingolstadt began to quote and implement them.
From a Parisian taxi to the desert
The versatility of the W123 has become its calling card. The engine range stretched from the modest 200D diesel (55 hp), which for decades became the canonical taxi horse and company car throughout Europe, to the six-cylinder fuel-injected 280E (185 hp) for demanding customers.

However, the main one in terms of engineering heritage was the 300D Turbodiesel version (1978). With the turbocharged diesel engine OM617, Mercedes-Benz was one of the first in the world to prove that an economical unit can also be dynamic. This later paved the way for a “turbodiesel rush” among premium brands in the 1980s and 1990s.

The real test of strength was not working in a taxi, but the 1977 London-Sydney rally marathon. Two practically production 280E sedans, prepared with minimal modifications for off-road use, did not just finish this 30,000 km “punitive race,” as journalists called it. They took first and second places. This result was the best advertisement for survivability and reliability that no amount of money could buy. By the way, one of the winning cars can be seen today in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.
Economic foundation
For the Daimler-Benz concern, the W123 became more than just a successful model. With almost 2.7 million copies produced over the decade (1975−1986), it set a mass production record for the brand. These volumes and reputation for phenomenal reliability provided the company with a stable financial flow. The funds received became the foundation for financing projects of the next decade, for example, the compact W201, aka Baby-Benz and the next generation S-Class.
Mercedes-Benz
Following the sedan, a coupe (1977) and a station wagon quickly appeared, which Mercedes-Benz traditionally calls the T-Modell (Touring). The logic was simple: cover all segments of demand. The largest circulation is the 240D sedan (about 449 thousand), the rarest and most collectible version today is the 280C/E coupe (about 3.7 thousand cars in total).
Living classics
Half a century later, the W123 remains not just an iconic car for enthusiasts, but also an example of rational engineering approach that is almost forgotten today. Its durability is a consequence of conservative solutions, such as galvanizing the bodies on later releases and maintainability pre-built into the design. The people of Stuttgart remember who they owe the success to, and to this day the Mercedes Classic program maintains the availability of thousands of original spare parts for this model – unprecedented for a car of this age.
Fifty years later, the W123 is judged not for its emotions, but for its facts. Among these are the creation of a new standard for classroom safety, a commercial triumph that determined the development of the company, and incredible reliability that turned the model into an independent cultural and historical phenomenon. Its value lies in this tangible, non-fictional significance.
