Mitsubishi will stop selling Pajero Sport and ASX in Australia, here’s why

Three models will be released from the Australian Mitsubishi range – in addition to the Pajero Sport and ASX, this will also be the Eclipse Cross, which was also sold in Russia. The reason for the cessation of sales was the tightening of the Australian Design Regulations (ADR). The innovation will come into force on March 1, 2025.

According to Carscoops, citing Mitsubishi Australia President and CEO Sean Westcott, the ASX, Eclipse Cross and Pajero Sport will leave the Australian market as the cost of upgrading them to comply with the new ADR rules is not economically feasible. In particular, the new rules require improvements to the emergency braking system. The production of crossovers for Australia has already ceased, but dealers still have stocks of cars that should be enough for the near future.

Citroen is leaving the Australian market, having worked there for more than 100 years. In Australia, a “beautiful” two-digit license plate was sold for 150 million rubles. Subaru WRX “interceptors” will appear in the Australian police fleet.

All three models were quite popular: in total they took up a third of Mitsubishi’s total sales in Australia at the end of 2024. Moreover, SUVs showed sales growth last year. Thus, over the past 12 months, Australians bought 12,330 copies of the ASX, which is 34 percent more than in 2023. Demand for the Eclipse Cross increased by 18 percent to 9,221 units, while the Pajero Sport sold 7,306 units, representing an increase of 31 percent.

Once sales of these three models are completed, only the Outlander crossover and Triton (L200) pick-up will remain from Mitsubishi in Australia. By the end of 2025, they will be joined by the new ASX, which is a slightly redesigned Renault Captur.
