The Moscow Ring Road is not just a highway, but a real testing ground for testing your nerves. Here, in five rows, 40-ton trucks rush side by side, taxi drivers uncertainly knowing the road, as well as street racers trying to slip between the rows. The permitted speed of 100 km/h plus the non-fine threshold turns any accident into a difficult ordeal. We should not forget about the danger of secondary accidents, when a car traveling at speed crashes into stopped cars. About which sections of the Moscow Ring Road the risk of getting into an accident is highest – in the material of Motor magazine.

However, accidents on the Moscow Ring Road have their own geography. Analysts and insurance companies identify several “red zones,” where the concentration of accidents is consistently higher than in other areas. According to official data from the Traffic Management Center (TCOC), published in August 2025, the most problematic sections of the Moscow Ring Road are located in the south of the city – at the 25th and 34th kilometers of the route.

Danger zone

Both points are located not far from each other: the first is at the interchange with Kashirskoye Highway, the second is at Varshavskoye. We are talking about sections less than 500 meters long, each of which has had at least four accidents since the beginning of the year. At the 25th kilometer, the cause of numerous accidents is the nearby gas stations. In the area of entry and exit from a gas station, the speed limit changes sharply: some people brake sharply, others accelerate. In a dense flow, this leads to passing collisions and tangential impacts.

At the 34th kilometer, where there is a complex junction with the Warsaw and Simferopol highways, the “last moment effect” plays a role. Drivers at speed do not have time to change lanes to shopping centers and major highways, and therefore try to jump through a continuous lane or brake sharply in the outer lane. The result is serious accidents involving heavy trucks, of which there are always a lot here.

Insurance companies also highlight other sections of the Moscow Ring Road where many accidents occur. Thus, according to data from the VSK Insurance House, based on statistics of claims for compulsory motor liability insurance in 2026, the most accident-prone area was the section from the 40th to the 50th kilometer. 10% of all accidents recorded by the insurer on the Moscow Ring Road occur here.

This section covers the southwestern and western parts of the route, where it passes by the districts of Yasenevo, Teply Stan, Ochakovo-Matveevskoye and Solntsevo. The reason is the huge number of “points of attraction”: large residential areas, shopping centers and car dealerships. In addition, repair work continues on this section with a narrowing of the roadway, which also does not facilitate free passage without difficulty.

To the southeast

Statistics from the T-Insurance company for 2025 highlight other points. Experts analyzed 20.6 thousand calls to the “Road Assistance” service and found that the Moscow Ring Road accounted for 10.8% of calls. At the same time, the most problematic sections of the ring are the 68th and 76th kilometers, as well as the interchange in Kotelniki. At the 68th kilometer, the Moscow Ring Road intersects with Volgogradsky Prospekt, and at the 76th kilometer, with Ryazansky Prospekt.

Time and season

Data center statistics for nine months of 2025 showed that the frequency of problem situations on the Moscow Ring Road depends not only on location, but also on time. Thus, during this period, smart cameras processed more than 1.1 million different incidents (not only road accidents, but also cases of car stopping, people appearing on the roadway and other violations). As a result, it turned out that in summer the peak of incidents occurs in the middle of the day (from 13:00 to 17:59 – 25% of cases), while in spring more accidents occur in the morning (from 11:00 to 15:59). It is noteworthy that in the summer pedestrians and scooter riders appear more often on the highway, and in the spring – faulty cars.

At the same time, the State Traffic Inspectorate notes that the most severe consequences occur in accidents that occur at night. The traffic density at this time is lower, drivers have the opportunity to accelerate faster and any mistake costs more.
