The car is intended for the markets of Brazil and other South American countries. The new product is designed to compete with such popular models as Fiat Strada, Fiat Toro, Chevrolet Montana and the future Renault Niagara.
The designers of Motor magazine recreated the original look of the new Volkswagen pickup truck, “removing” the camouflage from the new official images provided by the concern on May 20.
The Tukan combines the features of a crossover and a pickup truck: it has a short hood, a two-row cab and a small cargo compartment. The front end with narrow LED headlights and grille is reminiscent of the European VW T-Roc model.
The pickup truck received developed wheel arches, roof rails and arches behind the cab. The technical basis of the Tukan was a modified MQB platform, familiar from the VW T-Cross. However, to increase load capacity, instead of a more comfortable torsion beam, engineers used a solid rear axle and leaf spring suspension – like the direct competitor Fiat Strada.
It is assumed that the pickup will be equipped with a mild hybrid system based on a 1.5-liter TSI turbo engine. Budget versions will receive a 1.0-liter turbo engine.
Serial production of the Tukan will begin at the Volkswagen plant in Sao Jose dos Pinhais. The commercial version will be shown during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Sales will start a few months after that.
The Tukan will be among 21 new VW models for Latin America that the company plans to launch until 2028.
Previously, 10 budget alternatives to the Nissan GT-R sports car were named.
