The car is intended for the markets of Brazil and other South American countries. The new product is designed to compete with such popular models as the Fiat Strada, Fiat Toro, Chevrolet Montana and the future Renault Niagara, Carscoops reports.
The Tukan combines the features of a crossover and a pickup truck: it has a short hood, a two-row cab and a small cargo compartment. The front end with narrow LED headlights and grille is reminiscent of the European VW T-Roc model.
The car is equipped with developed wheel arches, roof rails and arches behind the cab. Technically, the Tukan is built on a modified MQB platform (like the VW T-Cross), but to improve load capacity it received a solid rear axle and leaf spring suspension following the example of its competitor Fiat Strada, rather than a more comfortable torsion beam.
It is expected that the pickup will receive a mild hybrid system based on a 1.5-liter TSI turbo engine. To reduce the cost of initial versions, the car will be equipped with a 1.0-liter turbo engine.
Serial production of Tukan will be established at the Volkswagen plant in Sao Jose dos Pinhais with a high level of localization (about 76%). The product version will premiere during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Volkswagen is sponsoring the Brazilian national team, and sales will begin a few months after that.
The Tukan will be one of 21 new VW models planned for Latin America until 2028.
It was previously reported that in Kazakhstan the premium relative of the Geely Monjaro will cost 3.4 million rubles.
