The company will also lay off about 10% of its staff on the continent – about 900 people – according to Carscoops.
Nissan’s main European plant in Sunderland (UK) is now only at 50% capacity, so the company is moving production to one line. The second one is actually freed.
What will happen to the second line has not yet been decided. However, Nissan is already negotiating with Chinese automakers (including Chery) about the possible use of freed up capacity. The company confirmed that it is exploring “opportunities with third parties to maximize plant utilization.”
Nissan calls the layoffs and production consolidation “necessary to protect the company’s future in Europe, protect jobs in the long term and ensure profitable competition.”
