Tesla sets a record for the number of car recalls in 2024

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla recalled the most vehicles of any automaker in 2024 – more than 5 million. Although Tesla’s total number of recall campaigns was relatively small, the scale of each one resulted in an impressive total number of recalled vehicles. At the same time, other automakers, such as Stellantis and Ford, conducted significantly more recalls, but affected fewer vehicles.

The 10 automakers with the most recalled vehicles last year collectively sent more than 25 million vehicles out for repairs. The reasons for the recalls ranged from minor issues, such as incorrect label information, to serious problems, including electrical problems, fluid leaks, fire hazards, or tailgates on pickup trucks not opening unexpectedly.

Honda, for example, recalled 3,794,113 vehicles in just 18 recalls, ranking fourth.

The General Motors concern is in fifth place – it conducted 33 recall campaigns, but only 1,872,521 cars were sent for service. In sixth place is BMW, which conducted 36 recall campaigns in 2024 and repaired 1,832,968 vehicles. And in seventh position is Toyota, which had 16 recalls, but 1,221,666 cars were sent for service.

Rounding out the top ten is Volkswagen – the German automaker also conducted 18 campaigns, but recalled only 1,088,407 vehicles. Ninth place went to Hyundai (25 campaigns, 1,109,978 recalled vehicles) and eighth place to Kia (19 recalls, 1,211,778 recalled vehicles).

Last year, Tesla really distinguished itself with record-breaking reviews: for example, in October, tens of thousands of Cybertruck electric pickups were sent for repair due to a failure of the rear view camera. In some cases, there was a significant delay in the camera image arriving on the monitor, which could increase the risk of collision.
