Recently, owners of cars whose headlights were originally equipped with halogen lamps have begun to replace the standard light sources with LED analogues. The head of the Main Directorate for Road Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Police Lieutenant General Mikhail Chernikov, explained to the magazine “Behind the Wheel” the consequences of such alterations.
The head of the traffic police reminded that the unauthorized replacement of light sources, from the point of view of the current legislation, is contrary to the requirements of the “List of faults and conditions under which the operation of vehicles is prohibited” – this is an appendix to the “Basic provisions for the admission of vehicles to operation and the responsibilities of officials to ensure road safety.”
“Item 3.2 of this list does not allow participation in road traffic if the class of the light source installed in lighting and light signaling devices does not correspond to the class of such a light source provided by the vehicle manufacturer in the operational documentation,” noted Mikhail Chernikov.
A violator who installed LED lamps instead of halogen lamps may be held liable under Part 1 or Part 3 of Article 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.
Part 1 entails a warning or an administrative fine in the amount of 500 rubles. In turn, part 3 entails deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a period of six months to one year.
Russia has strict rules regarding tuning. Illegal modifications to the design of a car are not only punishable by a fine, but can also lead to the deprivation of state registration of the car. About what kind of car tuning is illegal in 2026, and how it is punished – in the material Motor.
