Toyota has introduced a new version of the sports prototype on hydrogen

It is built on the basis of the GR010 HYBRID for daily racing, but instead of gasoline it consumes liquid hydrogen. There are no details yet, but in the FIA ​​WEC championship, hydrogen machines should appear next year.

On the eve of the “24 hours of Le Man” race, Toyota showed a new GR LH2 Racing Concept. The difference between him and the GR H2 Racing sample of 2023 is in the use of liquid hydrogen. The Japanese began to experiment with hydrogen internal combustion engine four years ago. Since 2021, the hydrogen Corolla has been playing in the Eneos Super Taikyu Series championship, and in 2026, hydrogen hypercars will begin to chase in WeC.

The main difficulty with hydrogen energy is increased requirements for structural materials and transportation. The hydrogen engine retains all the signs of classic ICEs, in particular sound and vibration, but it emits 90 percent less carbon dioxide. There is no need to develop everything “from zero”, as in the case of electric cars, and a change in the aggregate state of hydrogen from a gaseous to a liquid increases energy intensity, which leads to an increase in the supply of the course. Another important detail: a liquid hydrogen machine does not require a bulky compressor station, so you can refuel them directly on the pit lane.
