BMW Vision Alpina was built on the basis of the discontinued 8 Series

The concept was not created on the 7-series chassis or on the extended “four”. The model was based on the discontinued 8 Series Gran Coupe. Carscoops reports this.

BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk explained in an interview with BMW Blog: “We deliberately chose a platform that is no longer in production. So we want to emphasize that this is a new chapter for Alpina, and not just another BMW trim level. A brand must forge its own path within the group, and the best way to show this is to create an independent car.”

This is no longer just a statement, but a real manifesto. The old platform seems an illogical choice, but BMW has no plans to launch this concept into production – otherwise there would be huge difficulties. This is a symbolic gesture: the company wants to show Alpina’s independence, and not just use current models. After all, it was possible to take the 7 Series and create an equally beautiful car.
