The new ice palace on the Oka and Volga spit in Nizhny Novgorod will be called “Volga Arena,” said the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin. The arena should become not only a sports facility, but a space that will act as a new point of attraction and part of the cultural and sports cluster.
Many Nizhny Novgorod residents were offended by the name of the ice palace, reports NN.RU. As the journalists clarify, they studied the comments of their readers, and the bulk of the public perceived the name “Volga Arena” negatively.
Residents of Nizhny Novgorod also noted that the recently adopted law on the protection of the Russian language requires that signs, signs and advertising materials be in Russian.
However, this principle does not apply to trademarks, so the Volga car brand, after which the sports facility was named, can be written in Latin letters.
The revived Volga is a Russian brand launched in 2026 by the Passenger Car Production (PLA) company in Nizhny Novgorod. In essence, these are Chinese models adapted for the Russian market.
A car transporter transporting a Volga C50 sedan and a Volga K50 crossover has already been spotted near the car dealership of one of the large dealer networks in the capital of the 52nd region.
