A traffic cop who shot a schoolboy in the head during a chase in Karelia, according to the current Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, faces up to 10 years in prison. Automotive lawyer Lev Voropaev told a Gazeta.Ru correspondent about this.

“If it is established that he unlawfully used a firearm, that is, he did not take all possible measures to stop the vehicle without using a weapon, whether he knew that the car was being driven by a minor, whether the car posed a real threat to road safety – if these factors are established, the police officer may be held criminally liable,” the lawyer emphasized.

According to him, if it is proven that the police officer did not check all the circumstances and did not use other measures to stop the car, but immediately opened fire, his actions fall under Article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – abuse of official powers. The maximum penalty is up to 10 years in prison.

On June 30, the traffic police attempted to stop a car driven by a minor. During the chase, the inspector shot at the driver, wounding him in the head. The teenager was taken to intensive care.
