Tesla enters the India market

Ilona Mask signed a five -year rental agreement for the first showroom in the country, writes Indian Express. A room with an area of more than 370 square meters will be located in the Bandra Kurla Business District in Mumbai. In the future, Tesla wants to deploy the local production of electric cars, but before that the authorities will have to solve the problem with tariffs.

Renting a premises in Mumbai will cost Tesla 446 thousand dollars, or about 40 million rubles in the first year. Every year, the board will grow by five percent.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education of India is working on reducing trading tariffs for the supply of Tesla electric cars. The goal is to avoid increasing American duties on Indian export goods. In February, India reduced the basic tariff for the supply of American “green” vehicles from 100 to 70 percent, but they retained the total fee at 110 percent.

The solution to the problem with the tariffs will bring the construction of the Tesla plant in India, which Musk has been thinking about for several years. He is ready to invest up to two billion dollars in production of 500 thousand cars a year with the possibility of export to other countries.

So far, the electric car market in India is modest: they account for only two percent of the total volume of cars sold. Indian businessmen doubt that Tesla will be able to compete with Mahindra or Tata, since Musk does not live in India. According to local, poorly developed infrastructure, excessive regulation and bureaucracy can also inhibit the development of Tesla.
