A German motorist was punished for using the screen on the car’s center console to adjust the windshield wipers. Due to the fact that the driver was distracted, an accident occurred. The driver was fined 200 euros (17 thousand rubles) and was also deprived of his driver’s license for one month, Gazeta.Ru reports.
Even permanently installed displays can only be used while driving under certain conditions, the court ruled. The reason for using the touchscreen is not important, but the deciding factor is that the driver is distracted from the situation on the road.
As previously shown by research from the University of Melbourne (Australia), touch screens pose a serious danger. They deprive the driver of tactile communication, forcing him to take his eyes off the road. This creates a huge cognitive load and significantly increases reaction time.
