It turned out when Volkswagen will say goodbye to the last convertible

The life cycle of the T-Roc SUV with a soft roof will end in mid-2027. By this point, there will be no convertibles in the Volkswagen portfolio at all, because the “open” version of the Beetle has not been produced since 2019, and the roofless Golf and Eos were discontinued in the mid-2010s. It was possible to extend the assembly of the T-Roc Cabriolet due to strong demand: the model remains one of the bestsellers in the segment.

The Volkswagen concern is getting rid of unprofitable models: last summer Audi abandoned convertibles and coupes, and now the countdown has started for the “open” T-Roc. Initially, the compact crossover was planned to be removed from the market in 2025, because the eight-year life cycle is coming to an end. However, the VW T-Roc family remains among the leaders in the European market, so production has been extended.

Interestingly, the T-Roc convertible is produced at the Osnabrück plant, that is, at the site that has just completed the assembly of the Arteon station wagons. The continued production of the niche crossover made it possible to temporarily save jobs, although the long-term trend is the opposite: the auto giant is laying off employees and moving assembly lines to developing countries.

In 2023, the Volkswagen T-Roc Convertible unexpectedly became the class’s best seller, ahead of the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Alpine A110. And although the model does not reach the target of 20 thousand cars per year, sales of a potential replacement in the form of electric vehicles are even worse, and “hydrocarbon” bestsellers remain in service.
