BYD sold more electric cars in Japan than Toyota

The Chinese managed to outperform the Japanese in their own market: in 2024, BYD sold 2,223 electric vehicles there, and Toyota sold 2,038. The data is provided by Car News China, citing the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. Demand for BYD grew by 54 percent, while “green” Toyotas lost 30 percent of buyers over the year. However, neither brand is a favorite in the Japanese electric vehicle market.

BYD entered the Japanese car market in 2023. The first-born was the Atto 3 crossover (aka Yuan Plus), which was joined by the Dolphin hatchback. Later the line was replenished with the Seal sedan. In 2025, BYD will introduce another electric car to the Japanese – Sealion 07.

Toyota’s product range includes only one electric vehicle – the bZ4X crossover, created jointly with Subaru. Its price starts at 5.5 million yen (about 3.8 million rubles). That is, it is much more expensive, for example, BYD Dolphin, which in the “base” costs 2.99 million yen (1.95 million rubles). This allows the Dolphin to compete with the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf.

Leaf still holds the lead in the electric car market in Japan. It accounted for about half of all sales in 2024, but demand fell 44 percent to 30,749 units. This is the worst result for an electric hatchback since 2021.

Overall sales of electric cars in Japan decreased for the first time in four years, and by a third: 59,736 units were sold during the year.

Last week, new electric cars were shown by Honda, which recently announced the creation of a holding company with Nissan. At the CES 2025 consumer electronics show, the first-born of the Honda 0 line debuted: a crossover and an electric car with an unusual wedge-shaped body, called Saloon. The new products are promised a third-level autopilot, but production will begin only in 2026.
