Mercedes-Benz told why the electric S-Class failed

Four years ago, Mercedes-Benz introduced the EQS to the world of the EQL line. However, the liftback was not accepted as warm as the manufacturer expected. According to the chief designer of Mercedes-Benz, the proud of Wagener, the model was incorrectly perceived: it was never positioned as “S-Class on batteries” and generally significantly ahead of her time.

Wagener noted that Mercedes-Benz EQS was probably presented 10 years earlier than it should. In addition, he recognized misses with marketing: the electric car did not think like a luxurious electric sedan like S-Class, and this is reflected in his design. According to the designer, “this is a very, very progressive car.” Perhaps if Mercedes-Benz promoted it as a futuristic version of CLS or S-Class coupe, everything would be different, he added.

By the way, the audience is also not enthusiastic about the design itself: its aerodynamic silhouette was criticized for excessive “streamlines” and radicality, comparing a car with a huge jelly bob.

Mercedes-Benz recognized the failure of the Electric Gelik: there is no demand, the boss Mercedes-Benz confirmed the development of two new S-Class Mercedes at once, stopped developing the platform for the electric S-class

In the spring of 2024, the Germans refreshed EQS in the hope of giving sales a new impulse. The “jelly -like” design, however, remained unchanged, and the innovations concentrated in the front of the electric car.

The most noticeable is the silver lines on the plug that imitate lamellas. The emblem of Mercedes-Benz has moved to the hood, like classic models.

EQS will not have a second generation: the model will be combined into one line with S-Class by analogy with the BMW and its 7th series and i7. The new S-Class/EQS will be sold both with ICE and with electric power plants, but it will appear no earlier than 2030. Prior to this, EQS will still be updated, including next year, but this time the emphasis will not be made on appearance, but on the “technique”.
